Overview: Glucoamylase is an enzyme located on the brush border of the small intestine. It breaks down long chain carbohydrates or starches into sugar which the body then uses as fuel. It removes free glucose molecules rather than just breaking the chains into smaller ones. It does this by acting on the alpha-glycosidic bonds between glucose molecules in a polysaccharide.
