Overview: Papain is derived from the fruit of the papaya tree. Papain is mainly used for pain, swelling, and inflammation as well as fluid retention following trauma and surgery. Papain is also used as a digestive aid and is commonly applied directly to the skin to treat infected wounds, sores, and ulcers. Papain contains substances called enzymes that help break down proteins within the body.
